![]() ![]() Honorable mention to Simplenote and Quiver. They were either not very good at taking notes, or the few that are good, are not cross platform. I assumed that I would find several excellent cross-platform note taking applications to choose from. I spent a lot of time searching high and low for a fully digital solution. The workspace doesnt save the layout when i do 'maximize window'. I know that my setup is not earth shattering. Then, at the end of the day, I type my notes from my physical notebook in to OneNote for searchability. I use Boostnote for programming notes / Markdown. The web client is good enough if I need to read notes on linux. I use a system similar to a bullet journal. The abbreviated version of my setup is this:ĪmazonBasics dotted notebook as my primary note taking device. What I found was that by separating my two use cases - web clipping and Markdown/Gist-like notes - I was able to find a sweet spot (for now). I wanted the app to be cross platform (macOS/win10/Arch (Gnome)). I chose the Dark Mode from the Interface menu, and Material Dark color schema from the Editor Font menu.Īfter restarting, I change to the Full workspace, which shows me the Markdown preview.I recently went farther down the note-taking rabbit hole than I care to admit. Out of the box, QOwnNotes looks like an app from the 90s, but you adjust the appearance. Back on the previous screen click ‘Finish’. Next, is a dialogue box to setup your NextCloud Server settings.Ĭlick the settings button, enter your NextCloud connection info, and click the “Connect to oC/ NC Server”. TLDR make sure you pick the right folder. It took me a while to figure out why my notes were not syncing to my NextCloud instance. So when I clicked through here it created a different Notes folder. The Create folder check box is checked by default. However, my NextCloud folder is “NextCloud”, with a capital ‘C’, the path above has a lowercase ‘c’. I assumed it was detecting my NextCloud directory, and found my Notes folder. You will be able to switch between different panel layouts. Then best create a new workspace Preview only by clicking Window / Workspace / Add new workspace in the main menu. The screen above caused me a bunch of confusion, that I admit took my WAY too long to figure out. You can do that by turning off that the note edit panel is the central widget in the Panel settings. When I maximize the window, the leftmost column becomes too big - It might be more useful to keep the leftmost column always the same size (because there is no advantage on making it bigger when maximizing) and scale the width of the edit + preview columns/panels. Now I can launch QOwnNotes from the application launcher and get into the configuration screens. The workspace doesn't save the layout when i do 'maximize window'. Qownnotes 18.08.9 pbek - Plain-text file notepad with markdown support and ownCloud / Nextcloud integration ![]() The setup of QOwnNotes is very easy, as the developer has created a snap package. You can start creating notes now within NextCloud. Now, you should have the Notes app and a Notes directory. Go back to Apps and select the “Integration” category. Next, enable the QOwnNotes API integration within NextCloud. You can place all the panels wherever you want, get notified about. It features several panels with all the text entry and editing options all note-taking apps have to offer and even more. You should see the Notes icon with your apps. QOwnNotes is a free, open-source, and cross-platform note-taking and to-do list application with support for Markdown editing and ownCloud integration. Go to Apps, the the “Office and Text” category, and click the ‘Enable’ button under the Notes app. To setup note taking integration, you first need to enable the Notes application within NextCloud. You do need a working NextCloud setup, you can see how I did mine in this post. Honestly, I wish I had looked at this sooner. QOwnNotes can work without a NextCloud integration, and you can use it with just about any syncing application, Dropbox, SeaFile, Syncthing, etc. It gives you the ability to tag notes, search them, has quick, customizable shortcuts, and has some scripting ability (which I haven’t dug into yet.) It supports Markdown, which I have become a fan of the more I use GitLab/GitHub and Ghost. QOwnNotes is a nice, cross-platform note taking application that integrates with the NextCloud Notes application. Most of my note taking has reverted to just text files that reside spread across my Documents directory, and I have no good way of organizing them. Most of my data that was previously in Evernote, I had exported to folders in my Dropbox, but while I kept it, I didn’t really use it anymore. I had stopped using Evernote a few years ago, when I had switched my daily driver to Linux. The next part of this migration is something that is a LONG time coming, replacing Evernote. ![]()
