As such, the Praxis pressing of Flashback is rather rare. DADC pressings but was not used by Praxis.Įarly Canadian pressings were generally produced in limited numbers compared to U.S. The DIDX number appears in the matrix code of early U.S. back insert was modified when it was produced north of the border.īoth the disc and inserts display project number “DIDX1166”. ![]() The booklet and back insert both state “Printed in U.S.A.”, but the back insert also shows “PRINTED IN CANADA”. The disc states “MADE IN CANADA” at 3 o’clock. “6551” is part of the Flashback catalog number (CDP 7 4 6551 2) and therefore associates this pressing with the compilation. Praxis did however apply a unique look to the the disc thanks to their trademark wide mirror band at the center and a second mirror band at the outer edge (the “dead” space where there is no data, no music). EMI design of black text with no color coating. It is a rare pressing from the early Canadian plant, Praxis. Here we consider an early Canadian pressing that was released in Canada and that also found its way to the U.S. After working Boston’s infamously tough late-’60s rock circuit, they earned airplay for hard-driving covers of The Valentinos. Geils Band were known for their rousing live shows before finding even greater success as hitmakers in the ’80s. We could review the DADC disc, but let’s instead look at something a bit different. One of the defining blues-rock outfits of the ’70s, The J. In the U.S., the CD appeared on the EMI America label under catalog number CDP 7 46551 2. The CD contains 10 songs covering the ’70 and ’80s periods. In 1985, early in the CD era, EMI released the compilation Flashback - The Best of J. Featuring a hodgepodge of material taken from the bands three biggest career selling records (all on EMI), Flashback is an all too brief ten-track affair. Geils Band, it seems fitting to consider a hits compilation. Geils Band fronted by Peter Wolf gave us many radio and then video hits. Better yet, pick up one of the band's old live records like Blow Your Face Out or even Full House (both feature material from the band's superior Atlantic releases).A popular straight-up rock band in the 1970s and transitioning to a highly successful pop band in the ’80s, J. For a more thorough appreciation, invest in the much superior Rhino collection Houseparty: Anthology. As far as compilation records go, this one's the weakest of all the J. Wisely, the label chose to completely shun the band's god-awful post- Peter Wolf release You're Getting Even While I'm Getting I'm Getting Odd. It sure would have been nice to hear the live version of "Love Stinks" from Showtime (which is introduced by Wolf's now legendary, "Adam and Eve were smoking weed in the Garden of Eden" rap) or perhaps some other un-released live gems from the band's Freeze Frame tour - their biggest outing ever. Glancing over the track listing, it's obvious that EMI spent next to no time putting together this compilation and decided to issue it as some sort of contractual obligation (even though Peter Wolf would continue to release solo records for the label in years to come) or perhaps as a forgone catalog piece. Geils Band "deep" cuts like "Flamethrower" and the terrific "Just Can't Wait." Incomprehensibly, other essentials like "Sanctuary," "Teresa," "Just Can't Stop Me," "Nightime," and even the hilarious "Piss on the Wall" (not so essential) are nowhere to be found. Featuring a hodgepodge of material taken from the band's three biggest career selling records (all on EMI), Flashback is an all too brief ten-track affair which includes a handful of classics like "Love Stinks," "Centerfold," "Freeze Frame," and a couple of other essential J. Geils Band is the first Best Of album by American rock band The J. ![]()
